Cadbury has promised to redesign the packaging of one of its product lineups after an Australian woman mistook the packet for containing cookies that were safe for her child to consume.

Nine-year-old Isabel Marrero died from anaphylactic shock in March after her mother, Helen, mistakenly handed her Cadbury’s ‘Chocolate Chip’ cookies instead of her favorite egg-free ‘Choc Centred’ cookies.

Marrero was allergic to eggs, which are absent in the ‘Choc Centred’ variation but are an ingredient in the ‘Chocolate Chip’ cookies.

Both packets sport Cadbury’s trademark purple, near-identical imagery of chocolate chip cookies, and a ‘Cookies’ label, as shown below.

The only key distinctions are the names of the products and the colors of the snacks’ fillings.

“They both look like choc chip cookies to me…” said the heartbroken mother. “When you open them up, they look pretty identical but one has the allergen egg and one doesn’t.”

She urged parents to, “Please read [the packaging] every single time you have purchased a product, even if you’ve been buying it for five years.”

Cadbury has since vowed to make its wrappers more distinguishable by adding various colors and descriptions to them so as to “highlight further that the products are different.”

The revamped wrappers will only reach shelves next year, however, as the food products are manufactured overseas and packaged in Australia.
