Heinz’s ‘Mayochup’ Sauce Name Baffles Customers, Alternatives Surface Online

Earlier this week, Heinz announced the debut of its controversial ‘Mayochup’ sauce bottle in the US.

For those of you who are wondering what exactly is ‘Mayochup’, it is a condiment made of mayonnaise and of course, ketchup. Aside from the seemingly unusual combination, it appears that some internet users have found the name ‘Mayochup’ rather odd for the product as well.

A “phonetically smoother option” has now surfaced online that is ‘Tomayo’.

One user wrote, “I’m pro #Mayochup but we all know it should be called ‘Tomayo’.”

Another Twitter user commented, “Why isn’t #mayochup called ‘Tomayonnaise’? Call me @HeinzKetchup_US.” Another user thought ‘Metchup’ was a better option. “Why can’t it be ‘Metchup’? ‘Mayochup’ doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue. I feel like I’d choke on my [hotdog] saying, ‘Pass the Mayochup,’” the user wrote.

Heinz, however, revealed that it had considered naming its new condiment ‘Tomayo’. According to its director of marketing Nicole Kulwicki, there were many great name suggestions including ‘Tomayo’, ‘Pink Sauce’ and ‘Fry Sauce’. ‘Mayochup’, however, garnered the most votes that surpassed 500,000.

If @HeinzUK realise MayoChup doesn’t roll off the tongue as well as Tomayo, and that sung to Annie works perfectly for the advert “Tomayo, Tomayo, I love you Tomayo…” then you heard it here first kids. Fact.
